photon-photon collisions via heavy ion beams at LHC
نویسنده
چکیده
The cross sections for the production of hadrons in quasi real photonphoton collisions in heavy ion interactions are compared with the corresponding cross sections for central diffraction. The signatures, heavy ions with only slightly changed momenta together with two large rapidity gaps and a cluster of produced hadrons in the central region, are nearly identical in both processes. Therefore, it will be rather difficult to distinguish the two reactions experimentally. It is found, that central diffraction is the dominant process in collisions of protons, light and medium-heavy ions. The photon-photon process dominates in collisions of heavy ions like lead. Glueball Production in Peripheral Heavy-Ion Collisions
The method of equivalent quanta is applied both to photon-photon and, by analogy, to double pomeron exchange in heavy-ion collisions. This WeizsäckerWilliams approach is used to calculate production cross sections for the glueball candidate fJ(1710) meson via photon-photon and pomeron-pomeron fusion in peripheral heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. The impact-parameter dependenc...

متن کاملDeuteron Photodissociation in Ultraperipheral Relativistic Heavy-Ion on Deuteron Collisions
In ultraperipheral relativistic deuteron on heavy-ion collisions, a photon emitted from the heavy nucleus may dissociate the deuterium ion. We find deuterium breakup cross sections of 1.38 barns for deuterium-gold collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon, as studied at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and 2.49 barns for deuterium-lead collisions at a center of mass energ...
متن کاملPhoton-Photon and Photon-Hadron Interactions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Colliders
In central collisions at relativistic heavy ion colliders like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC/Brookhaven and the Large Hadron Collider LHC (in its heavy ion mode) at CERN/Geneva, one aims at detecting a new form of hadronic matter — the Quark Gluon Plasma. We discuss here a complementary aspect of these collisions, the very peripheral ones. Due to coherence, there are strong electroma...
متن کاملPhysics Opportunities in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions at Lhc
Due to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in very peripheral heavy ion collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. Photon-photon and photon-hadron physics at various invariant mass scales are discussed. Due to the very strong electromagnetic fields th...
